Residence of the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, commissioned by Britain's first Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole in 1722. Hunting parties with local Norfolk gentry would last for weeks, with visits from royalty common. For most of the 19th century, the family only stayed at Houghton for the shooting.
